Getting better at being fed. Now understands what is coming and gets impatient. Keeps mouth open for FAST dining. Likes the park, particularly the swing. First trip to Omi & Opi's house for Easter. No sign of separation anxiety - yet. "Talks" all the time. Holds hands up when he wants Mommy to pick him up. Wants to crawl but hasn't quite figured it out yet.

Mommy & Daddy had weekend away! Luke does fine but Omi & Opi were really pooped.

Top two teeth come in. Very fussy for a week. Mommy started with sign language for key items such as milk & eat. Can't crawl yet, but he can scoot forward while sitting. He can get from sitting to his tummy and back on his own. Starting to pull himself up on his knees. Time to lower the crib. Learns how to clap. Holds his own bottle most of the time. Loves to be outside & likes to go running with Daddy. Has gone as far as five miles in the jog stroller. Hair growth covers his scar very well. Plays differently than Grace did at same age. Loves to figure out how things work and fascinated by details. Must be a boy thing.

6 month well checkup: 20 lb. 10 oz & 28.5" tall.
Can now sit by himself. Wearing size 4 diapers & size 18 month clothes. Starting to say "dadadadada" and "sings" when happy or to calm himself. Strong & determined. Loves attention & grabs anything within reach. Tried baby food for the first time (yum yum!). Seems to like every food given to him so far (which might explain 90th percentile in weight!). Blows raspberries. Usually sleeps 11 hours, but is up to eat twice per night (turns out 2/1 all night sleeping was a fluke). Likes to be on his tummy, and can pivot on his belly when playing.

5 month well checkup: 19 lb., 4 oz, measures 27.5" 50/50 nursing vs. formula. Sleeping better in crib. Second tooth arrives (bottom right). Drooling like crazy. Mostly happy boy. Really good at "tummy time". Loves peekaboo & mommy's singing. Getting much easier and more predictable. Expressive babbling now common. Plays independently in the morning, but likes to be held in the evening.

Sleeps in own room & crib for the first time. Luke is unhappy at first but adjusts. Mommy is nervous at first but adjusts. Daddy is just plain happy to be back in his own bed.

Sleeping longer stretches at night (4-5 hours), got first cold. Trying to use legs to scootch forward on his tummy, especially if something enticing beckons (like his train). Smiles at himself in the mirror. Loves to watch Grace run around the room. Babbles often. Can sleep on his back much better now that his head is more round. Exploring things with his mouth.

Holding head up well. Looks at hands and feet often. Settling into a daily schedule. Grasps & holds items in his pudgy hands. Very good natured, smiles at his reflection in mirror or at faces that are invariably smiling at him. In contrast to his sister, is very still when he sleeps. Also in contrast to his sister, he's very ticklish (which is really fun!).

Tries to roll over, but arm gets in the way. Likes to have his hands by his face, especially when nursing or sleeping. He's a heavy eater & a light sleeper. Likes to look around, particularly when facing out in Baby Bjorn carrier. Sleeps in 3-hour chunks at night most nights. Sucks his hands and fingers instead of a binky, mostly when hungry.

No real change today. His test for meningitis looks negative, but definitive result won't be for a couple of days. Still not sure.
|
Monday
8/20/2007
|
They have to do a lumbar puncture in order to obtain spinal fluid for the test. Luke doesn't exactly enjoy this procedure, but hopefully it is the last one of its type. His vital signs are holding steady. High fever has been replaced by low-grade fever and he seems a little more comfortable.

Luke looks much better this morning! In addition to being the only ousider in the NICU, he is by far the biggest baby in the unit. He is eating like a champ so the nurses are amazed at how much of mommy's milk this kid can put away. His fever has subsided but is not normal yet. Pathology cultures come back negative once again. This is good but we are still in the dark. The docs suggest testing him for meningitis.
|
8/19/2007
evening
|
There has been no change to Luke's condition and he looks really sick. Mommy & daddy are getting worried. It's comforting that all tests have come back negative for bacterial infections, but it is also maddening to still have no idea what is wrong. The docs are suspecting something viral.
|
8/19/2007
|
Luke is the only "outsider" in the NICU, as all of the other babies are preemies that have never been home, much less to a concert of Jimmy Buffett music. In order to cut the risk to the other babies, they have Luke in isolation [a private room if you prefer] and everyone in or out needs to have on gowns gloves and masks. It's kinda creepy.

morning

Fever still present. Spikes up to 102.6º have necessitated continued Tylenol to keep fever around 100º. You can tell the little guy feels lousy. He's irritable and seems to be achy all over. Preliminary pathology results are negative, and docs allow him to eat mommy's milk that she pumped and brought in.
|
8/18/2007
evening
|
During evening visit, fever is down to 100.4º Tylenol is great. Docs are concerned about intestinal problems and are feeding him intravenously. They have poked and pricked him multiple times to draw samples for tests.

Mommy & daddy go home from the hospital without their son. They are really worried.
|
8/18/2007
9:00 am
|
Luke is in the NICU incubator with an IV in his little hand. Ouch! Many of the docs and nurses remember him from his delivery (because it was difficult). They are very reassuring. They describe that he could have any number of bad bacterial infections, or something as simple as a cold. But they don't take chances with babies of his age.
|
8/18/2007
7:15 am
|
Luke's fever is 101.4º in the ER. He is not eating. His heart rate is elevated. He clearly doesn't feel well. Because he is only 10 days old, they admit him to the NICU straight away. Mommy & daddy are terrified.

Luke is still hot. Hotline nurse says to take him to the ER.
|
Saturday

Luke awakens with fever of 99.5º. Hotline nurse says to unwrap him and watch for changes. He is not interested in eating, which is not a good sign.

Luke's first concert in the park with friends. Jimmy Buffett music is featured. Luke seems to find the scene soothing (read: he slept through most of it).
